Keep a checkpoint before a major rewrite
Before changing an ending, merging chapters, or revising a character’s motives, confirm your work is saved and create a book snapshot. Snapshots preserve a stage of the whole book for later recovery.
History, snapshots, and the full recovery toolkit are available from Professional. Compare editions.
Choose a recovery option
| What you need | Where to go |
|---|---|
| A recent edit | Undo or redo in the editor |
| An earlier document draft | Select a record in document history and restore it |
| A previous version of the whole book | Restore a book snapshot |
| A deleted document | Book settings → View trash |
Start with document history for an earlier chapter
Open the document, view its history, and select the relevant record to check the content. Save a separate copy of any new material you want to retain before restoring an older version.
This view shows document history. A book snapshot restores a stage of the entire book and has a wider scope.
Before restoring
- Snapshots affect the whole book. Back up new material you want to keep.
- Stopping AI leaves applied edits in place. Use history to recover earlier content.
- Check the contents before emptying trash.
Keep an independent backup too
History, snapshots, and trash depend on the local library. If the original drive or library is damaged, those records may be affected as well. Back up the complete library to another drive or Time Machine.
With iCloud Drive, wait for synchronization to finish before switching devices. Keep an independent backup alongside synchronization so another recoverable copy is available.
